Jamaican Beef Patty (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Dough

01 - 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
02 - 1 tsp salt
03 - 1 tsp turmeric
04 - ½ cup cold butter, cubed
05 - ½ cup cold shortening
06 - ½ cup ice-cold water

→ Filling

07 - 1 lb ground beef
08 - 1 small onion, finely chopped
09 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
10 - 1 tsp thyme
11 - 1 tsp allspice
12 - ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
13 - ½ tsp black pepper
14 - 1 tsp salt
15 - 1 tbsp soy sauce
16 - ½ cup breadcrumbs
17 - ½ cup beef broth
18 - 1 tbsp curry powder
19 - 1 egg, for egg wash

# Instructions:

01 - In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and turmeric. Add butter and shortening, rubbing them into the flour until crumbly. Gradually add ice-cold water and knead into a dough. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
02 - Cook ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Add onion, garlic, thyme, allspice, cayenne, black pepper, and salt. Stir in soy sauce, curry powder, and beef broth. Simmer for 10 minutes. Mix in breadcrumbs and cook until thickened. Let cool.
03 - Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out dough and cut into circles (6-inch diameter). Place 2 tbsp of filling on one side, fold over, and seal edges with a fork. Brush with egg wash.
04 - Arrange patties on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.

# Notes:

01 - For extra flaky crust, use very cold butter and shortening. Do not overwork the dough to keep it tender.
02 - Adjust cayenne pepper for desired heat. For an authentic kick, add a bit of Scotch bonnet pepper.
03 - Try ground chicken or turkey for a leaner option. Add diced potatoes or carrots for extra texture.
04 - Store baked patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Freeze unbaked patties for up to 3 months and bake straight from frozen at 375°F for 30 to 35 minutes.
